This is where Joshua speaks about a "choice". Now, I don't dispute that we make choices, but I deny that we can of ourselves choose to serve God - because we are by nature sinners in need of a Saviour.
But notice that the choice that Joshua gives them here is not between the true God and idols, but between the false gods of the Amorites and the false gods that their fathers served in Ur. See verse 2, "And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods."
